No matter what health challenges a patient faces, there is one specific trend I have observed over the last 15 years that holds people back more than anything else.

In my time working with over 5,000 patients – ranging from those dealing with ADHD and learning disorders to autoimmunity, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain – I’ve seen a broad spectrum of human suffering and recovery. Through this experience, a clear pattern has emerged regarding how we approach the concept of “getting healthy.”

Too often, people walk into a chiropractic office looking for health to happen to them within the four walls of the clinic. While the chiropractic adjustment is an incredible, high-powered tool for wellness, true health is a collaborative effort between the doctor and the patient’s daily choices.

The Mechanics of the Adjustment: More Than Just “Popping”

To understand why chiropractic is the best tool for building health, we first have to understand what an adjustment actually does. When a joint – whether in the spine or an extremity – loses its proper range of motion, it becomes a stagnant environment.

Joints receive their nutrition through a pumping motion. When they open, they suck in vital nutrients; when they close, they push out acidic, inflammatory waste products. If you lose motion, those toxins sit there. Over time, this leads to:

  1. Inflammation: The immediate response to stagnant waste.
  2. Degeneration: The long-term physical breakdown of the joint structure.

Chiropractic “breaks this loose,” but even that isn’t the most powerful part of the work we do.

The Brain-Body Feedback Loop

The most significant impact of a chiropractic adjustment is its effect on the nervous system. The pumping motion of a healthy joint sends constant signals to the brain, informing it of the body’s environment.

Think of it like holding a glass of water. If you have good feedback, you can bring it to your mouth perfectly. Without that feedback, you might dump the water over your shoulder. Without proper joint motion, your brain is essentially “guessing” where your body is in space and what resources it needs to deploy.

By restoring this feedback loop, chiropractic builds stress resilience. It allows your brain to stop guessing and start accurately managing your internal resources.

The Health Formula: Energy In vs. Energy Out

I often share my “Health Formula” with patients: If you can make more energy than you expend, you have the surplus required to heal and repair.

Health is a lot like finances. If you have money left over at the end of the month, you’re building wealth. If you’re spending more than you make, debt piles up. In the body, that “debt” manifests as symptoms, fatigue, and disease.

Chiropractic adjustments help you move more efficiently and reduce the “noise” in your nervous system, meaning you expend less energy going through the daily rigors of life. This leaves a surplus for healing. However, if you are getting adjusted but then neglecting your sleep, diet, and hydration, you may still be spending more than you’re “earning.” The credits (income) and debits (bills) have to be in balance (or favoring credits) for healing to occur.

The “Boring Things” That Build Health

Research – including a notable study from the 2010–2015 era – shows that after six weeks of twice-weekly chiropractic visits, only about half of patients were “halfway better.” (This same study showed that 30 visits was the average required to stabilize a patient that is in pain.) This brings up a vital question: why weren’t the others progressing faster?

The answer lies in physiological condition. Chiropractic is the best foundation for building health because it clears the path for the nervous system, but it doesn’t replace the other pillars. To see maximum results, you must stack the “boring things” on top of your adjustments:

PillarImpact on Health
MovementProper joint mechanics and lymphatic drainage.
NutritionProviding the “Premium Fuel” for cellular repair.
Sleep QualityThe time when the body actually performs its deep repairs.
HydrationEssential for flushing the acidic waste released by adjustments.
Stress ResilienceManaging the mental load that drains your energy surplus.

Chiropractic: Not an “Answer Alone,” But the Best Foundation

I want to be clear: Chiropractic isn’t a “cure-all” that allows you to ignore your lifestyle. You cannot out-adjust a bad diet or a complete lack of sleep. However, chiropractic is the best tool we have to actually build health because it addresses the master controller of the body – the nervous system, and it focuses on the foundational aspects that health can be built upon.

Exercise and stretching are fantastic, but they are not replacements for an adjustment. You need the adjustment to “open the door” and feed the brain the data it needs. Once that door is open, your exercises, supplements, and sleep habits become ten times more effective.

You Have More Power Than You Realize

In the modern medical model, we see a “prescription cascade.” A patient starts on one drug, then two, then five. Statistics show that being on five or more prescriptions significantly increases mortality risk. This is because these treatments often focus on suppressing symptoms rather than building health.

Real health doesn’t lie in a pill bottle. It lies in the consistency of the “boring things” and the maintenance of a clear nervous system.

You have been led to believe that health is something you have to ask someone else for. The truth is, you have incredible power over your own vitality. Your body is a high-performance machine – a Ferrari. If you give it premium fuel, proper maintenance, and keep the “onboard computer” (the brain-body connection) clear through chiropractic, it will perform phenomenally.
